ã 2009 – Who Are Those Guys? BBQ Competition Cooking Team

Disclaimer: No animal was harmed unnecessarily in the layout for this site or in the creation of this BBQ team. The chicken and pig depicted on our banner are professionals and were only acting, they were not harmed in any way. The chicken is actually from Street, Maryland and the pig knows damn well who we are.

Startin' The Fire

Startin the Fire is a first. It is a complete ‘how to’ book covering starting your own competition BBQ team, primarily in the KCBS series, although the process and principles explained can be applied to any competition cooking team in any series. It includes details for everything from your initial idea and preliminary considerations to what equipment you’ll need, setting- up your site and even selecting your team name. George also touches on what tunes to put on your I- pod, practice cooks, site safety, turn in box preparation, right through cooking your first event. Everything is included except for recipes and cooking methods. We are assuming you already know how to cook some good tasting BBQ. Included however, are ideas and tips to improve your overall contest results. There is even a glossary included so that you too can learn to “talk que”. The book also contains humorous stories and anecdotes covering the trials and tribulations of forming a new team and cooking as a rookie squad on the KCBS BBQ circuit.

“It's an excellent read...it speaks the truth, it's quite apparent that you've "been there, done that."  Plus, it’s very personal and funny.  I laughed out loud a couple times...I even squirmed a little, too."

- John Busch, Former competition cook, KCBS Master Judge and a KCBS Certified Table Captain

“I have interviewed some of the biggest names in the bbq competition world and aside from some quick tips I rarely get an in-depth look at what you need to have in order to start your journey in to the world of competitive barbecue.  George has gone through great lengths to put together one of the most comprehensive books dedicated to this portion of the industry.  I also appreciate George’s anecdotes, so while the book is a wonderful resource for anyone who is thinking about getting in to this sport, it has a personal essence to it that most reference materials lack!”

- Greg Rempe, Host of The BBQ Central Radio Show

“George has gone where no other has before….he tells you how to compete in barbecue competitions.  His book is a great read for anyone thinking of competing and for those already on the circuit.  It’s informative and funny!”

- Mike Stines, Ph.B., Author of Mastering Barbecue

“I’ve cooked on a few teams in my time on the circuit, but we never had this kind of organized approach.  Now that I have George’s book, my next team will have a good plan to follow and we won’t be stabbing each other with barbecue forks!”

- Ray Lampe, a.k.a “Dr. BBQ”, Author of five barbecue books including The NFL Gameday Cookbook

“A masterful yet fun journal that will teach avid barbecuers the ins and outs of competition bbq; a must-have handbook for anyone who wishes to join the ranks of the bbq world’s best practitioners.”

- Rick Browne, Host of the PBS-TV show Barbecue America and author of The Best Barbecue on Earth

“……when George sent me his query for this book, I jumped on it like a pig on corn and knew we had to publish it because it is totally unique in the BBQ field. No recipes! No explaining that barbecue is different from grilling! Just all you need to know about forming a competition barbecue team. Being a certified KCBS cookoff judge, I relish BBQ professionalism, and George has it in spades—or grills.”

- Dave DeWitt, aka “The Pope of Peppers”

"We see and talk to thousands of BBQ fanatics each year. Inevitably, some of these back yard cooks want to try their hand at competition cooking, to see how they stack up against the "pros". Startin the Fire is a great hands on instruction manual to help get them started".

- Mike Tucker www.hawgeyesbbq.com

"This book is like nothing I've ever read. If you want to save thousands of dollars and shave years off of the learning curve, Startin The Fire is a must read. Do yourself a favor, read, no, study, George's insightful look at diving head first into competition barbecue. You won't regret it."

- Rod Gray, Pit master- Pellet Envy BBQ Team, 2009 KCBS Team of the Year

"This is competition BBQ bootcamp in a book. Anyone who has ever been competition curious will surely find this a good read. I wish we had this when we started a decade ago."

- Todd M Johns; Pork Pullin Plowboys; 2009 American Royal BBQ World Champion

“Getting into competition barbecue not a trivial pursuit. There is a huge time and money commitment. George goes through the process of planning and organizing the effort so that process doesn't take away from the cooking. He also points out that competition barbecue cooking can be great fun. If you are considering starting a competition barbecue team then this book is required reading.”

- Tony McRae creator and host of a cool BBQ site and blog -  http://blog.backyard-smoker-barbeque-chef.com/

"Just finished reading the book. Awesome read even if you have been cooking for a while. My only complaint is I needed this book 5 years ago when I started. Could of saved me lots of time and money."

- Steve Zeravica- aka Sledneck- R2BQ BBQ Team
