Bel Air BBQ Bash
Bel Air, MD
Bel Air is the "hometown" contest for the WATG? gang but the visiting public have been asked to stay away, or at the very least, keep their visits short. The weatherman was promising perfect weather for at least part of the weekend. George would have no one to blame a poor performance on but himself, except maybe those pesky gremlins. A fairly solid finish for everything but chicken was enough to but a real damper on the weekend. The chicken score moved George to tears, which along with the 2 inches of rain that fell Saturday afternoon, made for a pretty soggy weekend.

New Holland Summer Fest
New Holland, PA
New Holland is the teams favorite contest of the year. We were in desperate need of a good showing. The weekend was held in check with the anticipated arrival of an unwanted guest. Note to self: When cooking a contest 2 team members down and under a hurricane warning, do not attempt to cook all the ancillary categories along with whole hog for the first time at a contest….not a good idea.

Pork in the Park BBQ Festival
Salisbury, Maryland
Recap: The Pork in the Park has become our season opener. The WATG? squad arrived on site Thursday evening and had plenty of time to get set up. Unfortunately, it seems we forgot how to cook good que during the off season and our scores showed it. 7th place chicken, 66th place ribs, 40th place pork, 43rd place brisket, 55th place anything butt (out of 56 entries), 19th place dessert, and 39th place overall. Hopefully, we’ll improve on our next outing, time will tell.

2nd Annual Middletown BBQ Cookoff
Middletown, DE
We headed to a first time event for the watg? crew in Middletown DE this weekend. Mose Zook and his crew did a fine job taking care of the teams and running the event. The weather even cooperated and cleared off Friday night into Saturday. The day was warm, slight breeze, just great. The only thing that stunk about the weekend was our performance. I really laid an egg turning in what would turn out to be “the” worst brisket of my entire competition cooking career. The highlight of the weekend was a call for pork which we have not heard in several years. Oh well. We had a lot of fun, we have nowhere to go but up, right? Hopefully we can turn this thing around in Frederick next month.

Holy Smoke BBQ Cookoff
Easton, MD
The guys wanted to cook this contest, George was going to be away on vacation. They wanted to cook it anyway, even with out George. They got together, entered the contest, made their plans, bought their meats and took off for Easton Maryland. The temperature was forecasted to be 100+ in the shade. The heat index was 123. The burning question was, could George stay away? The contest site was on the way home from his vacation site, would he stay away? could he stay away? I think we all know the answer, George arrived at the contest around 10:00 AM on Saturday morning to cheer the guys on. Believe it or not, he stayed out of the business of cooking unless asked. It was difficult, but he kept his big mouth shut, much to everyone's surprise.(George was the most surprised)
